Leadership skills do help in my field, but you cannot chew out lazy co-workers so that part makes it harder.
What advice or steps would you recommend for veterans preparing to enter your career field?
Use your GI Bill to get a computer science degree.
What do you enjoy the most about your career field?
It’s inside with climate control.
What do you like least about your career field?
I am on call and get calls at 3 AM sometimes. This is typical in the IT field.
What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success in this career field?
Ability to learn on your own by research online. Cognitive abilities/trouble shooting processes.
Is there something you wish you’d known or a skill you wish you’d had starting out in this career field?
C sharp/C++/Java Script.
How do most people get into this career field (internships, networking, etc.)? What are common entry-level jobs?
Internships are common with my company, but having experience and a degree are mostly what gets you in the door. Common entry level jobs would be basic Help Desk issues.

I knew someone that worked here.
What made you stand out as a candidate for this job role?
I knew SQL and was willing to learn. I also was the Director of Marketing and Support for my previous employer.
What kind of education, training or experiences does your job role require?
BS (Bachelor of Science) – Computer Science degree
What are the major components of your job role on a daily basis?
Trouble shooting software issues and writing SQL queries/ SSRS reports/ making software changes.
What do you like about your industry?
It is always evolving and every day is usually different.
How do you see your industry changing in the next 10 years?
As companies migrate their data centers to the cloud, the demand for people utilizing tools and implementing software(s) in this environment will increase. Another change is that a more people will work remotely. The brick and mortar data centers will start disappearing and shrinking as that cost will be cut by most business to increase profits.
